OKLAHOMA CITY (January 11, 2024)— For the tenth consecutive year, LifeShare Network achieved a record-breaking milestone by saving and healing more lives through organ, tissue and eye donation across Oklahoma. The generosity of hundreds of donors and their families served as the foundation for this lifesaving work.
LifeShare, the organization in Oklahoma responsible for the recovery of organs and tissues for donation, proudly announced that 559 lives were saved in 2023 – the most in a single year in Oklahoma.
None of these lives would have been saved without the generosity of 233 donors and their families who made the selfless decision to donate organs. These donors provided 649 organs for transplant, an increase over the organization’s best previous year in 2022. Last year, 602 lifesaving organs were provided by 249 donor heroes.
Among the significant achievements of the organization this year, LifeShare recovered lungs en bloc, performed a perfusion utilizing an XVIVO XPS device, and delivered the lungs for transplant. This was the first of its kind perfusion performed entirely by an OPO-based team.
LifeShare Network also reported a total of 949 tissue donors for 2023. Additionally, the organization facilitated 211 birth tissue donors. Birth tissue for donation is the placenta recovered from healthy newborn deliveries. This tissue brings hope and healing to patients who have a variety of medical needs including treating wounds. Combined, a record 1,160 individuals donated tissue to improve and enhance the lives of thousands.
In 2023, LifeShare successfully perfused 39 livers of which 30 were transplanted; performed four sets of en bloc lung perfusions with one successful transplant; and initiated recovery of two new types of tissue.
“For over a decade, our unwavering commitment to donation has saved more lives year-over-year. These results speak to the dedication and collaboration of our donor hospitals, transplant centers, staff, and volunteers,” said Jeffrey Orlowski, President and CEO of LifeShare Network. “As always, we are indebted to those who make the choice to be organ and tissue donors, without whom our lifesaving work could not be done.”
Through its work, the nonprofit saved and enhanced more than 90,000 lives last year. Yet the need for donors remains urgent. A new person is added to the national transplant list every 10 minutes and more than 750 people are awaiting a life-saving transplant in Oklahoma.
“As always, we encourage Oklahomans to register to be donors. It is crucial for our community to support organ and tissue donation to allow us to save more lives,” said Orlowski.
Currently, more than 65% of the state is registered to be donors. One person can save the lives of eight people by donating organs and they can heal the lives of 75 through tissue donation. Register as an organ, eye, and tissue donor at LifeShareOklahoma.org/Register
